It was such a good journey to read The Cemetery of Forgotten Books series.
I'll put the review of all four books in one.
When I first read The Shadow of the Wind, me being the semi gothic person loved the dark and gloomy description of everything. The entire world of this story was dark. And Sad. Rainy. Depressing.
Not forgetting the way it is written, the author has got this ability of making us feel everything in depth.
I regret not focusing on few characters much, because after finishing the 4th book, I almost had to reread the entire series again (in brief) just so I could relive the moments of those characters again which were mentioned in the 4th book.

I should have known the character of Julian Carax would be significant throughout. And of David Martin!
The Angel's Game is one book which I believe I would never completely understand. I was already very much confused with The Prisoner of Heaven's epilogue. It was contradicting the entire 2nd book's epilogue. But after reading the 4th one now, I think the 3rd one can be considered as the credible one.
But, I still don't understand. What made David Martin lose his mind? :(
Did he really kill Cristina and Vidal? Did he really stoop that low in his madness that he killed someone? And the very two people whom he had once cared?
The doctor informed the police about suspecting David's involvement in Christina's murder, but couldn't he also mention when Cristina hurt herself all alone in her room, claiming someone got into her?
In case the story is true? Honestly I believe it would have been all cleared up from doctor's testimony as he was the last person who had seen both David Martin and Christina together.
Also, there were two deaths in the series which affected me the most. Isabella's and Nuria's.
I wanted both of their deaths avenged, although it can't bring them both back.
Fumero was killed in the first book, but the satisfaction I got for the suffering of Valls in the last one made me doubt my own sanity.
What you sow, so shall you reap!
It was so satisfying reading him suffer. And how his body ended up getting dumped at the very place where he dumped the bodies POWs is what I call Karma.
He got paid back well. Really well. If Daniel was in front of me, I would give him a pat in the back for not killing him and ending his suffering. He deserved it. He deserved it all.
Okay, breathe. *tells to self that you're not a monster*
Breathe.
Yeah, I'm okay now.

In The Labyrinth Of The Spirits, I didn't expect Julian Carax to be mentioned. Heck, I almost forgot he's still alive out there.
My entire focus was on how Valls is going to perish. My obsession made me forget the existence of both Carax and Martin.
And it's ironic that both Carax and Martin died remembering the one person they loved/should have loved.
Martin's was painful. His madness lead him to his death. He returned to avenge Isabella, ended up rescuing the daughter of a friend he made in prison, and whose stillborn child reminded him of Cristina, which broke him and made him carry the baby and drown himself, just like Cristina had done.
Carax, in his last days, helped little Julian gain confidence on being an author like him, by writing the story, extraordinary story of his family. The things they all went through.
I wish Nuria was there to see how Carax spent his last years around her grave, wondering why didn't he ever give her the love she deserved.

This review is getting so random, but I have so much to tell. Alicia Gris was no one in the first 3 books but made such a huge impact in the last one.
She carried the pain with her all these years, getting helped by the one person who brutally betrayed her in the end. Screw you Leandro.
And I thought we were done with cruel and corrupt police with the existence of Fumero, we didn't need Hendaya in this one. But I was very glad to see his end come soon.

That's the thing about Carlos's stories.
He creates the characters which give you all the happiness and pain at once. All at once.
This book was a combination of so many things, but mostly pain. The painful journey of Alicia and Mataix sisters, the demise of Carax, Martin and Juan Sempere. Going through and reliving Isabella's life again. The only part which made me feel content was Vall's end. But I guess I mentioned that too many times to even count now.

Lastly, although the characters were fictional, I personally feel very sorry with the way they passed away.
Penelope Aldaya, Nuria Monfort, Isabella Sempere, Valentin Morgado, the entire Mataix family, Vargas, etc. Y'all will be missed.

Thank you Carlos Ruiz Zafón. ❤️
