I really underestimated this book. Took a good 40 days to finish this, reading every page taking my own sweet time, only to realise in the end I should have paid attention to the first half of the book.
The ending was fast paced. There was so much to catch up on. The mysterious character Andreas Corelli pays a huge sum to David Martin, the protagonist, for writing a piece which no one should forget. And he agrees because he wanted to live .
But there were many things which didn't add up. (Or maybe my mind forgot in those 40 days I took to finish this). How on earth did his illness get cured? And what exactly happened to Christina which lead to her death?
The madness which some of the characters faced was beyond me. I had respected inspector Grandes for trying to help out David throughout the book only to come to know he has already been sold out by the old Vidal. And there are some characters in every book which you wouldn't know what to do with them - Pedro was one of them. Things he was responsible for were kind of unforgivable, but without him David would have been nowhere.
And there was so much blood and death in this book compared to first one. Marlasca died the way he deserved. And so inspector Grandes. But Marlasca's poor wife, Roure, Inspector Ricardo Salvador paid the price for it as well.
But among all, the death of Old Sempere and Isabella hurt the most. It's always the same, like I lost someone my own. Though this was all described in a mere few lines, I couldn't imagine how alone the Sempere's son must be feeling. And it reminded me of how soft he was in The Shadow of the Wind. Makes me want to read the book again. And who knows in the near future.. I might.
