One word. Amazing.
Just that.
Amazing.
This author isn't failing to surprise me at all. There wasn't a single page since the start where I wasn't gripped by the story and wondered what's happening.
Honestly.
What's happening?!
So this girl, Karou, sketches about weird creatures and not only they turn out to be real, but they are ALSO her family.
How did a human end up amidst all of this? Why is she working for a creature, who isn't even of her kind, without even knowing what exactly is she working for? Collecting teeth? From random, strange, creepy people? What exactly is going on??
And another being appears, Akiva - a Seraph (squeals with excitement remembering Strange The Dreamer), who apparently plans to close all the portals which connects Brimstone to this world. From Akiva's perspective, it felt like he was doing the right thing. I mean, consider this angel-like angel, extremely beautiful in an ethereal manner, who's trying to close the doors of all portals. And consider Brimstone and the rest of the creatures, making Karou do bizarre errands for them, keeping secrets from her with she having no idea what they plan to do with all those teeth she's getting for them? It really felt like Akiva is doing the right thing.
If only.
So Akiva sees her for the first time. And with the way she cocks her head to look at him with curiosity in her eyes, stops this angel at his heels and makes him wonder. Who is she?
The same Akiva, who had forced himself to forget being merciful, sees her and forgets about that. And thinks of mercyy. The very same mercy which was taught to him by a loved one, but the consequences later resulted in the same mercy turning into a raging vengeance in his heart.
So what made him stop? What made him not kill her?
WHO was she?
I absolutely didn't see that coming.
When brimstone brutally kicked her out when she committed the mistake of entering into the chimaera world, he momentarily lost all the respect which I had for him. I mean, you hide stuff from her, even the magical world beyond that door, and have the audacity to ferociously kick her out when she's already injured herself? What could she have possibly done to receive such a treatment? Even if the mistake was grave as it seems to be, shouldn't it be sensible that she's warned beforehand about it, rather than toy with her curiosity like that?
Yes, it's all fictional, but I was still furious with Brimstone!
And then, later, it was all revealed.
Like a tornado approaching and sucking us into its chaotic spin, and when it's all over, leaving us with the shattered reality left behind.
Again, I absolutely didn't see that coming.
So they broke the wishbone and we were sucked inside the memories which were held within the wishbone. And we get to know many things.
Who was this Madrigal. Who were her people.
What is this chimaera world. And the war between them and the Seraphim.
How did she grow up. How was she raised.
And how did she meet Akiva. And how she fell in love with the same person, him, Akiva, her enemy.
How she was betrayed by her foster sister, all for her own pathetic, selfish reasons as she was engulfed by her ever increasing envy.
And how, Brimstone, even after all this, didn't leave her side. And Brimstone, the resurrectionist, saved her without letting a single soul in Eretz know about it. Saved her and raised her as a BABY. Gave her a complete different life where she'll be protected and loved. Where she can LIVE. And be safe. Safe from her own world and her own people.
All the respect which Brimstone had lost from me previously, he earned it all in just a few pages.
Brimstone wasn't just a master to Karou or a resurrectionist for Chimaera, but he was almost like a father to Madrigal.
And nope, I'm not crying. You are.
But one question remained. What made Akiva kneel down and cry in anguish when he finally came to know who Karou is? What has he found out which made him almost want to throw the wishbone into the ocean so that Karou never finds out about the truth and never gets a chance to hate him? And why would she hate him, when he's the one who brings all the light within her? Who gives her immense happiness? Who gives her "hope"?
Of Course, the author decides to unveil this suspense at the enddd and leave us hanging at the cliff.
Akiva, upon getting the chance of finally entering chimaera boundary again, entering the same world where his loved one was brutally executed by her own people, and ended all the possible hope of mercy and "hope" itself, he burns down the entire world and stands there, breathing in the ashes of the burnt bodies. Finally quenching the thirst of his vengeance. Finally ending the war.
Only to find out he not only ended the war, but ended the very same people who had SAVED his loved one. His Madrigal. His bird lady. His Karou.
And with all the portals closed and entire resurrection supplies burnt, there's no chance of resurrecting anyone either. How much time has it been since that happened? Weeks? Months?
Has any of them survived? Is there any chance to save any of them at all? Meagre one, though it might be? We can only "hope" for that.
Hope is all there is.
And in conclusion, here's my favourite quote about hope from this book!

"Hope can be a powerful force. Maybe there’s no actual magic in it, but when you know what you hope for most and hold it like a light within you, you can make things happen, almost like magic.”
