The Green Book

 The Green Book

My Rating: 3/5
Genre: Sci Fi, Children-fic
Finished on: 16th Dec, 2020

I picked up this one when I came to know my cousin is teaching this story to her students in school.
And well, there's always a child residing in me.
At that point, the title seemed catchy and I thought, why not give it a try?
And like any children's book, this was short and sweet. Something with which we can sit and ponder upon with our imaginative minds.

So basically the place where they used to live, the Earth, is dying. So they are all set to travel outer space in search of another, livable home.

And the next day we all went away, Father and Joe, and Sarah, and Pattie, and lots of other families, and left the Earth far behind.

Pattie is the protagonist here, through which we live this book. They finally do reach a planet though, and it wasn't quite normal unlike their previous home.

Grass made of glass cut through their slippers

There are a couple of significant characters mentioned in this.
Arthur, the head of one of the families who travelled with them.
Jason, another kid few days older than Pattie.
Peter, a tall bearded man.
Jason’s sister Mary, and Malcolm’s smallest, Bob, and some others.

So since this world had been quite different and unique in its own way, they were finding ways to get accustomed to this and try understanding the uniqueness so they can put it their use.
The trees there was far harder than the wood on earth. It was impossible to cut them down to make shelter for them.
But eventually they found a hack to solve their problem.

And then there was the Jellyfish.

Malcolm became excited and began to try to work out ways of using jellyfish as fuel

The new planet also had big creature which looked like flies. They initially thought it's to devour them whole, but thanks to kids bravery and experiments with them, they turned out friendly after all.

They eventually got used to life in this new planet, and found solutions to their problems.
The book ends in a unique way. With all the families sitting together and reading Pattie's diary, which she had started from the point they left the earth. So basically we have finished the book, but it's them now who'd be reading their story which we just read.

As said earlier, this book, like any other children's book, gives kids the chance to imagine a unique world and broaden their perspective of things.  And how one can think of unique ways to solve their problems, as long as their needs are met.

A short, good read :)
