Picked up fantasy after a long time (actually not so long, but it felt like that) and it reminded me why this has been my favourite genre of all time.
Because the moment I open one, it automatically creates the fantasy world where I can reside in.
:')

Initially I started making notes to write a review, there were just too many characters to remember. Only to know that half of the characters weren't part of the entire book apart from a page or two.

Consider the first chapter. There's Rutger and there's Joost, who has a crush on Anya. She's a Grisha, a healer. Their master or whatever, Hoede, is making use of some kinda powder to enhance her powers. It's called Jurda Parem. Tastes like Jurda, but is very different. And works differently too.
First chapter wasn't much clear, just that the powder seemed too dangerous to be used. Anya not only had the power to instantly heal the wound, but she had the power to get into minds of people and making them do things which she commands. And she does exactly that at the end of chapter. Makes the guards (Stadwatch) break the glass, and makes Hoede happily cut off his thumb (exactly what he had commanded a kid to do), and she leaves.
That's it.

Here I thought these character would be relevant later too, but let me tell you. They were not 😆
Let's move on.

Next chapter gives us an insight about the badass Kaz and his team.
There's Kaz Brekker: Known as Thief, Dirtyhands.
Inej Ghafa: Thief of secrets, a Wraith, a ghost.
Jesper Fahey: A sharpshooter.
For now these are are introduced along with others. Dirix, Rotty, Muzzen, Keeg, Anika, Pim, Big Bolliger, Rojakke.
They are part of something which can be called Dregs, Barrel, or Crow Club. They are under an old man, known as Per Haskell. He makes them do deals, and they do it.

So in this chapter they were meeting members of a rival party, Black Tips. Apparently the member, Geels, had planned a secret assassination on Kaz and his team by hiring two guards. But we come know Kaz in these matters is waaay ahead. He not only knows about this, but also knows the guards names and their weaknesses. He uses his sassiness to turn the table against Geels. Turns out one member of theirs, Big Bolliger, was the one who ditched them. And Kaz makes him pay too.
I was in awe. Now this is what I'm looking for :D
Kaz's team member, Inej, is an acrobat/wraith/spider. She secretly climbs the wall and catches hold of the other guard before he can decide killing Kaz or his team is worth taking the risk or not.
Well, at the end, Geels and his team member Oomen gives up. And Kaz walks out with his team with head held high and his swag at the peak level.

I'm pretty sure all readers fell for him right at this point.

Soon we come to know about the main plot. Kaz Brekker has a meeting with a someone called Van Eck. He actually gets abducted in an alley by him, and this has never happened to Kaz. It is revealed soon that the beings who attacked Kaz, and whom Kaz could not attack as they just keep going through him were Grisha, Tidemakers, under the influence of Jurda Parem. With this Van Eck begins to tell the story of Jurda Parem and how dangerous it can be. To Grisha and to the world. He even begins talking about how it started and what all affects it has. It was started by a Shu man called Bo Yul Bayur. This drug will amplify the powers of Grisha in unimaginable ways. But, since its a drug, obviously it has addictions and side effects. Any Grisha who takes this, would be craving for more. And the 2nd dose is a dead end. There is no going back. Either they keep taking it to survive, in turn craving for more. Or they simply end up dying.
And that's how we come to know that Anya has died in a same manner.

Why is Van Eck telling this to Kaz? Because Bo Yul Bayur is being held hostage at The Ice Court by Fjerdans, the witch hunters. In other words, Grisha Hunters. And he wants Kaz to steal him back. As Kaz is already famous for being a thief without getting detected. Without being caught. He's perfect for this job.
And why should he do this? Why risk his life trying to penetrate a place protected by its powerful walls?
Well, he gave them two reasons.
1) Save the world. This Jurda Parem, as he has already explained, could end up being very lethal to entire world. Businesses, markets, lives, everything is at stake.
Someone has to save the world, right?
2) Money! Kaz was offered not a couple of thousand but 5 million Kruge. And Kaz makes it 30 million by the end of his discussion. He has to pay his team members after all.
They shakes hands and make a deal.
The deal is a deal.

Kaz returns to his place and informs to Per Haskell about this. Inej, being a spider of the house, overhears the conversation. And keeps waiting for Kaz to tell this to her himself. But he does not. Simply tells her there's a new job and she needs to get Wylan and Jesper too.

Meanwhile Kaz goes to meet Nina.
Meet Nina Zenik. She's a heart render. A Grisha.
She can manipulate stuff inside anyone's body. Increase heart beat, decrease the pulse. Make someone feel better or worse.
And that's what she does where she works right now. People (or Men) come and she changes their pulse to make them feel at ease.
When Kaz visits her she's surprised. He suggests a plan which kinda infuriates her. It's about releasing Matthias from Hellgate, something which Nina had been begging Kaz to do for ages! But this time he needs Matthias. Matthias Helvar. He's a Fjerdan himself. And knows his ways around the ice court.

So they hatch a plan and manage to enter the Hellgate with ease. We witness a hellshow where prisoners choose to fight dangerous creatures just to get a private room for themselves.
No surprise there, Matthias does too. And in this fight he gets to fight wolves. And wolves are sacred to Fjerdans.
He wins of course. But Nina wonders what storm might be raging inside him which made him do that.

So they had a plan. There were Kaz, Inej, Nina, Jesper and Muzzen. So the plan was to make Muzzen look exactly like Matthias and basically replace him, when they do that and heal Matthias, we might have expected Matthias to take Nina in his arms? But no. He tries to strangle her.
And that's because Nina was the reason he was imprisoned in the first place, as she accused him for slavery.

But there's no time for petty talks now. Kaz wants him in his team. But why should Matthias listen to him? What's in it for him? And this is treason. As he'll be helping them penetrate the walls of his home itself.
No amount of money will tempt him for taking part in any such mission. Then Kaz shows him the bond. If they succeed in this mission, not only will the blame of slavery will be taken off from his name, but he'll get to return to his home without being a convict and be a drüskelle again.
Go back to his freedom.
That tempted him fine. And he agrees.

Kaz has his team now.
Inej, Jesper, Nina and Matthias and Wylan.
Why Wylan, you ask?
Here's a surprise. He's their insurance for that money. He's Wylan Van Eck.
He's Van Eck's son!

So they set off to Ice Court.
Of course they faced challenges while leaving Ketterdam. They were ambushed by Rival parties. Razor gulls and Black Tips. Inej almost pays the price for it while trying to save the others. She recalled her father while being in an extremely injured state.
Oomen, the guy from Black Tips had stabbed Nina and she's bleeding very bad. To save herself she tries to climb the crates to be in safety.
Climb, Inej. She recalls her father telling so.
I can't, Papa.

She can't climb anymore, and when she feels someone is tugging at her feet, she decides its better to end her life rather than be held hostage by any rival gang so they try to spill truth out of her. But that was no needed at all.
Kaz comes in the nick of time and saves her :')

And not only does he save Inej, he takes in Oomen too, fishes the information out of him, stabs his eyes and throws him into the sea. He got his revenge for hurting Inej.
As for the information, we come to know Pekka Rollins had sent the gang to stop Kaz and his team.
Pekka Rollins and Kaz go way back.
He's responsible for death of Kaz's brother Jordie. Through betrayal.
He's responsible for Kaz being who he is now.

And Kaz wants to make him pay.

So they set off. Inej recovers. And Kaz tells them the plan.
They go in as prisoners, find a way to the embassy from there, reach the point where the checkpoint has been passed. Enter, take Bo Yul Bayur and leave. While destroying the bridge which connect the ice court from the rest, sounds easy, isn't it? It almost was.
The entire trip it was shown how the characters got along. Matthias still hates Nina, but the way she spends sleepless nights just to make sure Inej stays alive, softened his heart.
Wylan and Jesper get close too.
And.. Don't even ask about Kaz and Inej. They are going to play hard to get for the entire book, I can tell.

When they reach, the plan is set to action. They walk and walk, and come across few Grisha under the influence of Jurda Parem. With the help of Inej and Nina they manage to defeat them. Nina is distraught, as she had known the Grisha personally. And seeing how the drug affects them made her more determined to get to the person who started this all.
We also come to know the history between Matthias and Nina. It was all a misunderstanding, Nina accused him of slavery as the land where they were in was surrounded by many Grisha's. Had he been spotted as a Druskelle they wouldn't leave him alive. She had to do that.

Moving on. They manage to enter as prisoners just fine. But here we see the vulnerable side of Kaz. We saw him tremble.
We saw him pass out
Although this was witnessed by only Inej, but it surprised us all. And the reason was known shortly.
All the prisoners, closely packed and bound together reminded him of the plague in which he and his brother Jordie got trapped in.
Those days, Jordie being his only family, all was fine while working for a person called Jakob Hertzoon. The person tricks Jordie in investing into a business and ditches him real bad. He goes bankrupt, they sleep on the streets, and catch the plague which was going viral. Jordie doesn't make it, but Kaz does. And is determined to find the man responsible for his brother's death and end him.
Kaz Rietveld was dead.
Kaz took the name Brekker.
He was Kaz Brekker now.

So they reach the prisons. Kaz pretends he sneaked in lock picks just to create a distraction, enough to avoid the guards attention on Matthias, who's a Fjerdan and might seem familiar, and Jesper, as he's a Grisha too.
That was a surprise. Yep.
He's a Grisha, and a Fabrikator.
And that's how he helps create new lock picks for Kaz so they break out of the prison.
Now Kaz and Jesper go to release Nina and Inej. Matthias and Wylan to go some area and see if some stuff can be stolen with which they can create a custom bomb of their own. Also to get a rope.

The plan was for all of them to meet near the incinerator, and then Nina and Matthias to go back up and quickly see if Bo Yul Bayur is hidden somewhere in the prison itself or not.
But Kaz changes the plan a bit. By the time Mathias and Wylan return, Inej informs Kaz and Nina already left.
What was Kaz's plan?

His plan, we find out later, was for him to find Pekka Rollins as even his team was asked to come and try this heist for Van Eck. Nina on the other hand, searches and  ends up discovering a place/prison solely meant for Grisha. Where the Grisha cannot use their powers. She gets scared, and tries not to think how her race might have suffered here in this place. She leaves, and cannot find Kaz. While trying to find him two guards catch her sight and she tries to deal with them and run, in turn alerting more guards. All this time they were all clocking their movements through the bell which sounds at the place.
But now, a different kind of bell was ringing. It was an alarm.

On the other hand, Inej was supposed to climb the incinerator at the top, tie a rope at the top and help the others climb. But incinerator surprised them all by functioning at that point. So it was not only a big climb for Inej, but a hot and dangerous one. She almost couldn't make it, and recalled her father again in these moments. But rain came as a blessing for her, and she woke up from her trance and quickly climbs all the way up.

Nina comes running. Warning all of them to get going, but is equally surprised at not finding Kaz. But no time can be wasted. Inej has already dropped rope for them to use and climb. And they do except for Jesper, who is waiting for Kaz to come.
And he does!
He's all bruised and bloody but he makes it. And they quickly climb all the way up before any guard spots them.

Why Kaz was all bloody and late is revealed later, but right now, there are important matters at hand.
All up, and safe. What next? The alarms are still ringing and they have observed that the security has been tightened up. The place where they were planning to drop off past the security checkpoint is no longer a valid option, as another checkpoint has been set up a short distance away.
They were back to square one. What now?

Inej offers a solution. She and Nina go inside as part of Menagarie group. Tante Heleen's group. The one, under whom Inej once used to work.
Kaz reluctantly agrees and they quickly hatch a new plan. Jesper and Wylan go and trigger Black Protocol, the very same protocol they have been trying to avoid. And Kaz, Matthias will try finding a new way to get in.
No Mourners.
No Funerals.

For Inej and Nina, they manage to swap places with two Menagarie girls, but while showing papers they start suspecting Inej. And she was asked us to stand aside. Nina has to do this alone.

Meanwhile Kaz and Matthias manage to take down two guards and dress themselves as those.
And there Wylan and Jesper are on their way to reach the place to try and trigger Black Protocol.

Nina has the main task, but things start getting trickier here. She spots Jarl Brum, Matthias's captain, who has seen her on the ship those years ago when they kept the Grisha's as captive. Thankfully he doesn't recognise her, and Nina manages to coax him into taking her to place where Bo Yul Bayur might be possibly there.

We come to know it's some place called treasury. But there things start going veryy wrong. Nina realises Jarl has been acting up all along. He knows very well who she is, and has locked her up in one of the cells, similar to the other cells around her where Grisha's are kept. And he did not do this alone.
Matthias was with him

It was a surprise, yes, but hold your horses. He did this to save her. He had already seen Jarl Brum way before she met him inside, and also observed how Brum was following Nina around. Before Brum could get to her, Matthias meets and informs him about a fake plan connecting her, so Jarl doesn't suspect anything else.
And now, with Nina inside, he ditches his own captain, saves Nina, gets to Kuwei Yul-Bo, explode the whole place and they  run for their lives!

Yes!

Wait wait. Who is Kuwei Yul-Bo?
He's son of the real Bo Yul Bayur, who unfortunately died in a cross firing. Since he had helped his father in  developing the drug, he's being held hostage and is equally valuable as his father would have been.
Here, this is the point where Black Protocol alarm rings as Jesper and Wylan successfully manage to do that. And at the same point there Tante Heleen, the woman who owns the place where Inej once worked before joining Dregs, reveals who Inej really is and tells the guards she probably came in with her team as a part of some mission.
The black protocol alarm rings, Inej takes this moment as a distraction and runs.

There Matthias, Nina and Kuwei were trapped again among guards, but Kaz to the rescue, he opens up the tree which the Fjerdans used for worshipping and they all jump inside like the Alice (from the Wonderland) they are. To some place nobody knows where, but at least it's away from the danger they were in.

Inej manages to find Wylan and Jesper. And these both geniuses create a drill strong enough to break down the glass made from Grisha Fabrikator! They grab an army tank, and use that to get away from the place.
And while they were at it, they also blow up the bridge so none of them follow them from behind.

Finally, finally, all of them meet and they are together. But before they could get to harbor, they see there were a number of guards along with Grisha heartrenders ready for a battle.
Great. They have the Grisha army.
They cannot win.
But Nina thought otherwise, she asks Kuwei for a small dose of Jurda Parem. Small enough for her to be able to defeat them in one swift. And she does that. With one swish and flick, all of them, and I mean, all of them slept.

That was just not it. From behind, Jarl Brum comes with his army wearing suits which won't allow any Grisha to harm him. But Nina uses the very same soldiers she made fall asleep and attacks the army, making them very vulnerable to her powers.
While she was at it, she almost considers torturing them, the way they had done to her kin, the Grishas.
But with Matthias's request, she leaves them alone. She doesn't want to be a monster she was not.

They leave the place.
Wow.
30 million kruge is waiting for them the other side of the sea.
Some 7% of the book is still left though.
Can it be this easy?
What's the catch here?

We come to know soon.
Nina is writhing as drug's effects are taking place. Kaz thinks Wylan and Nina are better off at the ship while the others go and deliver Kuwei to Van Eck.
But when they do, we come to know Van Eck has ditched them all.

The Merchant Council was never part of this plan as he had planned this for his own selfish reasons. Have a Grisha army, rule the burnt world after burning it down.
But Kaz, like I said, is wayy ahead of them all.
The Kuwei standing beside them was not Kuwei at all, but Wylan. As Kaz made Nina work on his face while she still had Jurda Parem powers. And Wylan gave his consent, as he wanted to know once and for all whether his father truly loved him or not.
And turns out he didn't. As his son, Wylan, can't read or write. How can he be an heir to his wealth?
There's already another child which he's expecting. And that child can easily replace Wylan. He doesn't need his son anymore. It's okay.

Except, that his son was right in front of him. And the person which he needs to make his plan successful, Kuwei is somewhere off the island with Nina.
Kaz had planned this and he saw it all coming.

Van Eck is furiousss
And he decides, he doesn't need everyone alive for this. Kaz will do just fine to tell him the truth. So as the command was being issued to kill them all, Kaz does a mistake.
He gives a slight glance at Inej, and Van Eck takes that opportunity. Realizes capturing Inej could be better than killing the rest, so he does and vanishes away.

Inej is gone.
30 million Kruge gone.
But most importantly, Kaz's girl is gone.

He's devastated and furious at first, but then he hatches another plan. And this time, all of them are determined and in. They all want to rescue Inej, as without her, none of them would be alive right now.

They go to Pekka Rollins and make a deal. We come to know Kaz had rescued him in The Ice Court as that's not a place Pekka should die. His death should be at Kaz's hands.
But that's for another day.
Right now he needs Pekka's resources.
To save Inej.
To save his girl.

THE END.

Wow, it ended with such a cliff hanger! I'm surprised I managed to not start reading the sequel right away up till this point!
And even this review went long, but no regrets 😂
This is just me narrating the story to future-me reading this :')

So, okay.

A quote from the book:
